
Dr. Joya Chavarin is an Oakland-born educator, mother, and community leader who has spent over 25 years creating pathways for others to rise—through education, workforce training, and culturally rooted wellness initiatives.
She is the founder and CEO of the Workforce Development Unit (WDU), an Oakland-based organization committed to helping youth and adults access opportunities that change lives. Her journey began as a Head Start parent volunteer and evolved into a career supporting learners of all ages—from early childhood through college and career.
As COO of GospelFest Oakland, Dr. Joya Chavarin brings strategic expertise and a deep-rooted commitment to Oakland’s communities, helping ensure the festival reflects the city’s richness, resilience, and spiritual strength. For her, this festival is both a professional mission and a continuation of a cherished community legacy—where gospel music, cultural joy, and collective healing converge in the heart of the Town.
